Shimba Hills National Game Reserve is a small National Reserve in the coast of Kenya established in 1968 covering an area 0f 192.51 km2. It’s 33 km from Mombasa and 15 km from Diani Beach. The reserve is an area of coastal rain forest, woodland and grass land being one of the largest Coastal rain forests in East Africa after Arabuko – Sokoke forest. This reserve is rich in flora and fauna and hosts the highest density of African elephant in Kenya. Other animals species found in the area are Sable antelopes, elephant shrew, bushy tailed mongoose, and other small mammals like fruit bats. The forest is an important bird area and is endowed with forest birdlife while the grassland hold localized species such as red – necked spur fowl, croaking Cisticola and Zanzibar Red Bishop. The scenic Sheldrick Falls is a site to visit and the dense Mwaluganje forest are also found here along with 4 campsites. The main attraction in this reserve is the beautiful Sable antelopes who found a paradise here. Other animals found in the area are Buffaloes, giraffes, zebras, and baboons.
Pick up early morning from hotel and drive for 30 min to the main gate. Discover local villages on the way with breathtaking landscape and vegetation. Enjoy morning game drive in the reserve with rendezvous with various animals and birdlife. The climax of the morning game drive is the guided nature walk to the Sheldrick Falls with an armed Ranger. NB: ONLY FOR THE PHYSICALLY FIT.
After the nature walk drive back to your beach hotel with a game drive en route. Arrive in time for your lunch.
